The Holy Family's escape to Egypt is a significant event in Christian tradition, recounted in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 2:13-15). It takes place after the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. After the Magi (wise men) visit Jesus and bring him gifts, they are warned in a dream not to return to King Herod. Herod, feeling threatened by the news of a newborn "king of the Jews," orders the Massacre of the Innocents, aiming to kill all boys two years old and under in Bethlehem.
An angel appears to Joseph in a dream, instructing him to take Mary and the infant Jesus and flee to Egypt to escape Herod's wrath. Joseph immediately obeys, and the family leaves for Egypt under the cover of night. They remain there until Herod's death, at which point the angel again appears to Joseph, telling him it is safe to return to Israel.
The family then settles in Nazareth, a town in Galilee. When The Holy Family escaped to Egypt, they lived on its land for three years and eleven months. During their escape, they visited several cities and sheltered in some of them, which we have listed in the itineraries in the exact same order as the Holy Family stayed.
